Active or Passive? Cooperative Learning Game: Use these notes, the cooperative card game and the review that follows to teach your students how to write in the passive and active voices: Teaching Notes: The passive voice is used: 1. To emphasize an agent– the doer or thing that does the action e.g. The cure was discovered by team of famous scientists. In an active sentence the object of this sentence would be the cure. E.g. team of famous scientists discovered the cure. In the passive form, the noun object the cure becomes the subject of the sentence and the agent is the team of scientists. 2. When the doer is unknown or unimportant. e.g. To celebrate the holidays, songs were sung and feast was enjoyed. At the end of each quarter, teachers were evaluated. Production quotas were met every month. Profits were made in every sector. Passive Form An auxiliary verb be or get the past participle of the main verb. E.g. The cure was discovered by team of famous scientists. That famous rock star got mugged late that night. Cooperative Card Game: Student Instructions: Work with your partner or group. Shuffle the cards. Take turns reading each card out loud. Place the cards in the passive voice in one pile and the cards in the active voice in another pile.
