The Inuit are people who live in Northern Canada and Alaska. The areas they live in are very cold and covered with snow for most of the year. The Inuit people have learned to do many things to survive the cold. During the winter, the Inuit used to make sh elters out of snow and ice. It might sound strange, but house made of snow can be warm. The ice blocks were very thick, so warm air stayed in the shelter. The ice walls also protected people from the wind. Today, Inuit people live in modern houses with thick walls to protect them from the cold. The Inuits word for home is igloo. www.k5learning.com K5 Learning 2020 11 Level Reader The Inuit language is called Inuk titut. These days, the Inuit speak English but still learn Inuk titut. The Inuit of long ago didnt have vehicles like cars or trucks. They would travel long distances by sled. The sleds would be pulled by dogs called huskies. These are big dogs with thick fur. Huskies like cold weather and are strong enough to travel long distances. Today, the Inuit have cars and trucks, but they still sometimes travel with dog sleds. Dog sleds are safer on the snow and ice. The Inuit also use snowmobiles, which are special vehicles for traveling over snow. The land where the Inuit live is frozen most of the year. This makes farming difficult. In the pa st, Inuit people ate mostly meat and berries. Families would often travel and hunt together in large groups. The men did most of the hunting and fishing, and the women would clean the fur and cook the meat. Children would stay with the women to learn how to do these things. www.k5learning.com K5 Learning 2020 12 Level Reader When boys were old enough, they would go hunting with the men. The Inuit hunted animals like seals, caribou, rabbits and foxes. They would make clothing out of the animals skin and fur. After hunting, the Inuit had special cerem ony. They would sing songs to thank the animal for providing them with food and clothing. This is called Katadjak, or throat singing. The singers make noise from their throat to imitate the sounds of birds and animals. Today, the Inuit still hunt and fish, but they also have normal jobs and stores to buy food and clothes. Throat singing is also traditional game that the Inuit play. Two people take turns making traditional Katadjak sounds. Then, they make their sounds sillier and sillier. When they got to the bottom, the light from the opening seemed far away. They were the only ones there, and it was completely quiet. It felt little spooky. Janie and her mom walked slowly forward. They wont hurt us. They kept walking until they reached the other end of the cave. They climbed out and were greeted by the sun once again. Janie looked at her mom. She looked little pale. They all look the same with tube-shaped bodies and brownish skin. They dont have spikes, and they will never grow wings. All they do is crawl around in the dirt. However, these worms are actually pretty interesting. Even though earthworms all look very similar, there are many different types. Some common types are rain worms, nightcrawlers, and angleworms. Rain worms are the worms we see wiggling on top of the ground after heavy rain. Nightcrawlers come out after the sun goes down. Angleworms are put on fishhooks and used as bait for fishing. www.k5learning.com K5 Learning 2020 24 Level Reader Earthworms can be from about two inches to foot long. Two inches is about as long as finger. foot is twelve inches, or about as long as mans foot. The largest earthworm recorded was named Dave. He grew to be 16 inches long and weighed nearly an ounce. That is about the same weight as twelve dimes and twice as heavy as any other earthworm on record. Sometimes, the things animals dont have can make them more interesting. For example, earthworms dont have lungs. So, how do they breathe? They breathe through their skin. They also dont have eyes. Instead, one end of the earthworms body senses light. It is important that earthworms can sense light because if they spend too much time in the sun, their skin will dry out. If this happens, they wont be able to breathe. Earthworms also need to stay out of puddles because, unlike fish, they cannot breathe under water. www.k5learning.com K5 Learning 2020 25 Level Reader Earthworms prefer to stay under sever al inches of moist dirt. This protects them from light, keeps their skin damp, and provides an endless supply of food all around them. Earthworms eat tiny pieces of plants and fungi that they find in the dirt. Abundant food is important to earthworms beca use they eat their body weight in food every day. Could you imagine if every person ate their body weight in food each day? It would be lot of food. After an earthworm eats, it produces castings. This is another word for earthworm poop. Castings contain nutrients that help flowers, fruits, and vegetables to grow.
