Open World 2 Unit 13, final test name: March 27 2025 points: signature: /35 mark: 1.Reading Answer the questions below. You dont need to write complete sentences. a) Why did doctors use robot to help with the operation on the patients left eye? b) What was the doctors role in the operation? What tasks did they have? c) Why did doctors use robot to help with the operation on the patients back? d) What could have gone wrong in the back operation? e) Why is it not possible at the moment to have robots do every operation? /10 Robots in the operating theatre You are going to read text about how robots can help hospital doctors operate on patients. First look at the questions on the next page. Then read the text and do the exercise. 1 Robots used in operations in hospitals can do things that even the best doctors cant do. 5 In England, 65-year-old patient can see with his left eye again after surgery with the help of tiny robot. It was one of the first robotassisted eye operations of its kind. The patient was thrilled and said it was almost like fairy tale that the operation had been possible. 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 At regular eye check problem had been found with the patients eye and it soon became clear he needed an operation. Unfortunately, human hand would have been too big and unstable to carry out such delicate operation. So the doctors turned to robot technology. They used joystick and computer screen to direct an extremely small fine needle into the eye. Using microscope, they were able to check what the robot was doing. The robot looks like an artificial hand and has several motors, but unlike human hand, it can stay completely stable and steady. That way it was able to make such precise movements that no damage at all was done to the eye during the operation. The doctors were very happy with the robots performance and hope that many more operations like this one will be possible in the near future. And in the USA, doctors used robot to help them cut tumour out of patients backbone. The rare tumour was in place which was extremely difficult to get to at the point where the patients backbone connected to his skull. The operation was very complicated and took two days. In this particular case, the use of robot was extremely important. If the doctors hadnt been very careful, the patient might have been paralysed (that is, unable to walk or to do other everyday things). But it was also highly important that they removed the whole tumour, so it wouldnt grow back. With the help of the robot, they were completely successful and the patient is cured and able to go back to his daily life and work. 50 Neither of these operations was only performed by robots. In each one the doctors themselves had key role, and the robot was simply helpful extra. It will still take long time until robots can successfully perform operations by themselves or almost entirely without doctors. This is because operating on humans is so very complex. But it is reassuring that robots can help medical professionals with very delicate procedures that would be hard or even impossible for the human hand. 2.
